History

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), has a rich history steeped in folklore and traditional uses. Its dark green leaves and aromatic scent have made it a valuable plant for centuries. The botanical name is derived from Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, fertility, and the forests and hills. Native Americans associated mugwort with witchcraft and believed that rubbing the leaves on the body kept ghosts away. Other magical attributes include protection for road weary travelers, and general protection against the evils of the spirit realms. Mugwort has even been reported to encourage dreaming.

Benefits

Mugwort offers a wide array of benefits, making it a versatile and cherished herb in various traditions. When used as incense, its subtle, earthy, and herbaceous aroma helps create a calming and relaxing atmosphere, ideal for meditation and relaxation practices. Mugwort is renowned for its ability to promote vivid and lucid dreaming, often used in dream pillows or burned before sleep to enhance dream recall and quality.

In traditional Asian medicine, mugwort plays a significant role in moxibustion, a practice where mugwort leaves are formed into sticks or cones and burned on or near the skin to stimulate acupuncture points, improve blood circulation, and relieve pain. Additionally, mugwort is used to alleviate digestive issues, reduce anxiety, and provide menstrual support due to its mild uterine stimulant properties.
